Personal Project Presentations
31st March
This week P6/7 have been presenting their personal projects to the class. We've had a really wide range of subjects (though dogs were the most popular theme this year!) and some really exceptional presentations. Well done to all of the pupils for your hard work in creating your presentations. I'd chosen two pupils to get certificates at assembly today for their presentations, but unfortunately they were both off ill so were unable to collect their certificates. We've had a very quiet classroom for the last couple of days so I hope all our unwell pupils make a quick recovery. Have a lovely Easter holiday everyone and we'll see you back soon for Term 4!
Making Gyoza
30th March
For our final Asian cookery lesson, P6/7 made some delicious Japanese Gyoza. To make these tasty dumplings the pupils had to make the dough, then roll it out and cut it into circles. The filling had to be prepared before being spooned into the dumplings, then the gyoza had to be sealed up into their distinctive shape. The gyoza definitely seemed to be the most popular food out of the three dishes we've made!
Taj Mahal Drawings
For our final Asian-inspired art lesson this term, P6/7 used squared paper to create drawings of the beautifully symmetrical Taj Mahal.
Asian Cooking Lesson 2:
Thai Red Curry
23rd March
This week for our cooking lesson P6/7 cooked up a delicious vegetable Thai Red Curry with rice. The pupil were able to practise their chopping skills as there were a lot of vegetables to be prepared, and I'm glad to say that they were able to do the washing up too!
Snowsports Day 2
15th March
Another fantastic day skiing and snowboarding for P6/7 today. Although we didn't get a blue sky day like last week, the snow was better today and all of the pupils got to go up on the funicular to the upper mountain. Most of them also got to ski/board all the way back down to the bottom! Another really enjoyable day, though some were a bit tired by the end...
Cooking Curry
14th March
Today as part of our topic on Asia, P6/7 were learning some cooking skills as they made a delicious Indian Saag Paneer curry and some tasty chapatis. All of the pupils tried the curry and almost everyone gave it a thumbs up!
For our next cooking lesson, P6/7, you will not get out of doing the washing up! 😉
Jelly Earthquakes and Farewell to Miss McShane
10th March
P6/7 have really enjoyed having a student teacher, Miss McShane, in class for the last 6 weeks. For her last teaching lesson yesterday, P6 had great fun designing earthquake-proof buildings using cocktail sticks, marshmallows and jelly! Today was her last day at Abernethy so the pupils threw a surprise leaving party complete with an amazing homemade cake. We would all like to thank Miss McShane for her hard work and wish her good luck for her next placement.
Snowsports Day 1
8th March
An absolutely amazing day on Cairngorm for P6/7 today. Our skiers and snowboarders enjoyed a perfect bluebird day with lovely snow and glorious sunshine. Here's hoping for more of the same next week!
World Book Day and Playground Leaders Training
2nd March
This year for World Book Day, pupils were invited to dress up as their favourite book character so we had some wonderful costumes in P6/7 as well as several 'footballers'! Throughout the day we did a variety of World Book Day themed activities, including designing a book cover and taking part in a 'guess the character' quiz. In the afternoon, the P6 pupils went through to P1-2 to do some shared reading which was a lovely chance to work with the younger pupils. Meanwhile, P7 had their first session with Kerrie Dickson on becoming playground leaders.
Rotary Quiz
28th February
The Abernethy P7 quiz team took part in the Rotary Club schools quiz on Tuesday evening. Our super Abernethy stars did fantastically well to finish in 3rd place! They were actually tied in joint 2nd at the end of the 10-round quiz, but were pipped in a tie-break round by Aviemore, by just one point! The pupils were all a credit to the school and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Spey Valley for organising the quiz, and congratulations to the winning team, Grantown Primary!

This week we did some paintings inspired by the Japanese painter Hokusai. The paintings were our own creation inspired by ‘The Great Wave’. We also finished our Ming vases and put them on the wall. The Green Reading Group finished their book ‘The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips’ by Micheal Morpurgo, this book was about a girl called Lily and her cat called Tips who are forced to leave their village.

This week has been a busy week for P6/7 but we have definitely enjoyed it. On Monday we had our topic maths in the morning and after break we did some reading and spelling. In the afternoon we had P.E which was super fun. On Tuesday and Thursday we have been doing art with Miss McShane, where we have been making pictures of Ming vases. Wednesday and Friday we had very special days for Orlagh and Jonah as it was their Birthdays.
Mandarin Numbers!
6th February
This week for our Mandarin lesson with Mrs Ma, we were learning to draw the Chinese characters for the numbers 1-10. We used calligraphy brushes to draw the characters using water on special paper which showed up like ink when it got wet.
