Weeks commencing 4th and 11th March
Quite a few of our children have been on holiday recently, and this sparked discussions about how they got there - so our topic over the last couple of weeks has been on different ways we can travel! We discovered our nursery children have been travelling in all sorts of way - by foot, car, truck, rocket and even a dinosaur!
This interest tied in nicely with the upcoming Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel - perfect timing for learning how we travel safely on a bike! We got out our balance bikes out and have been learning how to fit our helmets properly and how to do an 'M' check to make sure the bike is good to go. We have also been practicing how to do use froggy legs to propel the bike and get our balance just right for moving onto pedal bikes. And well done to everyone who walked or wheeled to nursery this week as part of the Big Walk and Wheel!
We enjoyed doing a vehicle treasure hunt outside, where we used a clipboard and checklist to find the different pictures hanging around the garden, marking them off when we found them. We also had some great fun junk modelling to create our own amazing vehicles - we had cars, buses and even a horse box!
World Book Day was on the 7th March, and what fabulous costumes we were treated to! We had a lovely day talking about all our favourite books and reading lots of stories. We also had a visit this week from Lorraine and Jazzy as part of the Childsmile oral health programme and they were very impressed by how well the children sat and listened to a story about visiting the dentist.
We are now spending most of our time outdoors, and with the weather being warmer we are able to start playing with water again in the nursery garden. We had some interesting waterfalls on the mound, and were were served delicious mud creations from the mud kitchen - yummy! We were also able to get out our new slide and we were quite amazed at how the children lined themselves up and patiently waited for their turn! On Explorers this week (travelling by foot!) we headed off on a new adventure, and after crossing the main road into Balnagowan woods, we tramped through the forest to the 'Dragon's Den' for snack. We then had a lovely walk back round the edge by the golf course, looking to see how many different trees we could spot.
On a final note, we are still experiencing frosty mornings and although the day warms up quite quickly it can be a bit nippy to start - please make sure that children still arrive dressed appropriately for the outdoors. At this time of year, waterproof trousers and jackets rather than snowsuits are usually adequate, with plenty of layers that can be taken off as children warm up. Please note, that to avoid getting cold and having to keep changing clothes, children are only allowed to play with the water when wearing waterproofs. We would ask that as standard, parents/carers make sure that children always have waterproof trousers and jackets with them.
Enjoy the photos!
