When eating meals together, chat about what food on your plates comes from animals and what food comes from plants.
Look at buildings around you and discuss what materials they are made from e.g the woodshed, the house, the garage.
Remind children to cough and sneeze into their elbows and wash their hands after blowing their nose, before meals etc.
Week Commencing 25.9.23
Well it has been a rather short week due to the strikes, so not very much to report! Despite the weather forecast we still managed lots of time outside. On Monday we did some more show practice with the plan to perform in front of the school at Assembly on Friday. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible this week, so we have rescheduled our theatre spectacular to next Friday at the last pupil Assembly of the term.
On Friday Rona Smith visited the nursery to have a chat with the children about creating school murals. The children showed great listening and talking skills when Rona asked them to name their favourite animal and colour. We are really looking forward to Rona coming back to talk to us about what we will be doing next!
This week the children noticed that the apples on our tree are getting rosy and red, and beginning to fall off in the wind. We split one of the windfall apples to have a look to see if it was ripe, and we think we will be able to start harvesting next week. We will be discussing what we can do with the apples and thinking about how we could use them to raise funds for the nursery -
We are very excited that on Monday we will be welcoming Lorna Wisely, our new full time member of nursery staff - we are really looking forward to introducing Ms Wisely to everyone!
Have a great weekend all and we look forward to seeing you on Monday
Week commencing 18.9.23
It was a very wet start to the week, so what else could we do on Monday but get on the nursery red suits and go and do some puddle jumping! We had lots of fun making very big splashes, though unfortunately our red suits are not quite as waterproof as they used to be - apologies for all the soggy trousers and socks that were sent home at the end of the day!
Because of the short week last week we have continued with our focus on theatres, and on Monday we finished making our fabulous theatre signs. We continued to practice our performances and started to think about how we could get people to come along and see our show. The children came up with some great ideas for our advertising posters, ticket design and costs (we were quite relieved when the initial proposal to sell them for £1000 was revised to a more affordable £10!) . Don't worry, this exercise was for learning only and we're not expecting anyone to fork out! We will video the performance and post it on the blog for everyone to see! (For free!)
We had a lovely day for our Explorers adventure on Wednesday - thank to everyone for turning up dressed and ready to go! This week we started to look at the variety of trees that were around us. The children took photographs using the i-pad and we discussed the different ways that we could find out what they were - we came up with books, a tablet, the internet and google! We will be continuing this theme and will be looking at why trees are important for us in the environment and how we can respect and look after them.
Our N5 children took part in their first 'Safe, Strong, Free' session on Monday. For those taking part, the next session is this Monday, 25th September.
Please be aware that, as notified by the school, the nursery will currently be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week.
Enjoy the weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday.
Week Commencing 11.9.23 (INSET days 11th/12th)
It's been a short but busy week! On Wednesday we headed out on Explorers again, though for a shorter time than last week as we had to get back to the Nursery Garden to welcome James, our new friend who will be starting Nursery next week. We were very impressed with how well the children got themselves organised this week!
After a warm up where we practiced finding a space, this week's P.E. was all about dinosaurs - we used our imagination to think about how we could move like a Velociraptor, Diplodocus, Pterodactyl and a Plesiosaur. We had to look carefully as we as we scuttled, stomped, flew and swam around the gym hall to make sure we didn't crash into our friends!
After seeing some painted stones around the Nursery garden, the children were asking if they could paint their own. This sparked a discussion about cavemen and cave paintings, so we watched a video story called 'Stone Age Boy', and had a group discussion about when and how stone age people lived.
On Friday, the children came up with some lovely names for our outdoor and indoor Theatres - "The Nursery Acorn Theatre" and "The Hazelnut Theatre"! We started to make some lovely signs which we are planning to finish on Monday.
The weather has started getting a bit colder - could parents/carers please make sure that children are now coming to nursery with clothing for the cooler weather e.g. hats, gloves, waterproofs.
Please note that Monday will be the first session of 'Safe, Strong and Free' for our N5 children - if parents/carers do not wish their child to attend any of these sessions, please let us know on Monday.
Have a lovely weekend all and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.
What a sweltering week we had - we are so lucky that our nursery garden is perfect for these hot days, with plenty of shady spots to escape the sun!
What a surprise we got on Monday when we discovered that dinosaurs had sneaked into our nursery garden and classroom! We had lots of fun having dinosaur adventures on the mound and and practicing positions by lining them up beside, in front and behind each other. Underneath was a bit more tricky!
A classy theatre had also appeared in our garden and we have been impressed by the showstopper performances of the Sheep Gave a Leap as well as some great impro work - we definitely have some thespians in the making!
On Wednesday we went on our first Explorers this term and after packing our wee rucksacks with our water bottles and crackers, we headed into the woods for snack together on the logs. After this we explored the area around us, learning how we lift and move branches carefully for building dens. We also noticed the blaeberries, and reminded ourselves that even when we think we know what the berries are, we must ask an adult first before eating them. Our big children were also very helpful at teaching our newbies one of our Explorers rules - "If you hear your name, stop, and come back."
Thursday was P.E. day, and this week we were learning how to move around in a shared space and not bump into each other, and then how to make sure we were in our own space when we stopped. We then played a sharing game with our cute cat beanbags, practicing our throwing and catching on our own and then passing it to our partner for their turn - what great listening, turn taking and sharing!
Looks like it is going to be another great weekend - enjoy the lovely weather! Don't forget, Monday and Tuesday are in-service days, so nursery will be closed. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday - which is Explorer's day! So don't forget that the children need to be wearing long trousers and have appropriate footwear for walking in the woods, as well as their waterproofs.
Playing sharing activities at home with the family e.g. share apple slices - "I'll have one and you have one".
Play games which involve turn taking e.g. board games.
Read a story and get your child to make up something else for the character to do.
Play games using simple positions e.g. "Can you stand in front of me? Can you stand beside me?..."
